DJ MARCELLE (AFRICA PREMIER)
DJ MARCELLE/ANOTHER NICE MESS (NL / JAHMONI) (AFRICA PREMIER)
Surprise, adventure, entertainment and education: Four key words often used for describing Dutch DJ and producer Marcelle/Another Nice Mess. Using live (and in the studio) three turntables, Marcelle takes her mix talents to high heights. She is as much, or even more of, a musician as she is a dj.
By putting different styles of music in a different context, she changes the way we experience those individual styles. She fuses musical styles like no other, making it seem like they always belonged together and making the audience believe they are listening to one track instead of three played simultaneously!
She plays with expectations and roles: Environmental sounds are combined with avant garde noises, animal sounds are used and mixed with left field techno, free jazz, weird hip hop, cutting edge electronica, new African dance music, dubstep, dancehall and lots of less classifiable records.
She is an original, skilled mixer, with a very distinctive style of her own, avoiding most dj-cliches and stale rules. As much inspired by avant garde art movements as fluxus and dada, the real life absurdism of Monty Python as by the wild experiments of dub, post-punk and the latest developments in electronic dance music – Marcelle has always been following musical developments very closely and has a keen ear for innovative and ‘new’ sounds. She strongly believes in the excitement and artfulness of creation and development. With her extensive record collection of some 20,000 vinyl and counting, Marcelle has a strong historical knowledge of past and contemporary ‘underground’ music.
On stage and on her records Marcelle transcends a sense of openness and a feeling of freedom, which often have her described as ‘totally enriching’, ‘a true ear opener’, a real ‘pioneer’.
Marcelle plays all over Europe, both in clubs and in meseums/galleries, and is a resident dj in a lot of cities, amongst them Vienna, Berlin, Munich, Basel and Zurich. Since 2015 she is a live dj for a Barcelona circus/performance group.
Besides playing live all over the place she has released four double vinyl album on the German ‘Klangbad’ label, set up by Hans-Joachim Irmler, founder member of the legendary krautrock band Faust.
She also poduces her own music; on the German label Jahmoni she has started releasing a series a 10” club tracks, the first one (‘In The Wrong Direction’) was released in october 2016; a new record will follow early 2017.
Marcelle also does weekly and monthly radio shows for various radio stations in Europe. On a John Peel discussion group on the internet she was recently described as the ‘best post-Peel DJ’.
For Marcelle the musical form is in a way irrelevant, as long as some urgency is there and a need for not standing still. Therefore sometimes bookers, journalists and audience members initially get confused because Marcelle is hard to pigeonhole. A fitting description would be ‘avant garde ethno bass’ – but you decide.

Kalbata, real name Ariel Tagar, is veteran producer from Tel-Aviv and the co-founder of ‘Fortuna Records’. Regardless of genre, his distinct musical approach comes through in everything he does – a deep affection for the lowest frequencies and a collection of vintage effects and instruments which guarantee his razor sharp beats will always have a warm analog feel, floating in a pool of endless ripples and echoes. The same qualities come forth in Kalbata’s precise and intense DJ sets, which cover anything from Techno to African tribal music & Dub.
Kalbata has many releases to his name on legendary labels such as Soul Jazz Records and Tru Thoughts to name just a few. His 2014 album “Congo Beat The Drum” was recorded in Jamaica and came out on London’s Freestyle Records to great acclaim. He also directed an award winning documentary film about the project.

CONTOURS (UK) AFRICAN PREMIERE
CONTOURS (UK) AFRICAN PREMIERE
Contours, the project of musician, producer and DJ Tom Burford explores the spaces, rhythms and textures that sit between House, Jazz, Afro, Latin, breakbeat and Hip Hop.
Having been exposed to an eclectic range of music from an early age, Contours DJ sets traverse a litany of sounds and influences. Growing up playing drums and percussion, Contours’ productions draw heavily upon this, incorporating sounds and rhythms from Africa and Latin America coupled with those more often heard spilling out of dark sweaty basement clubs. This fusion creates an infectious blend of the electronic and the organic, the live and the programmed. Samples, field recordings and live instrumentation all form part of Contours sound and approach, where building a groove is at the core of all his music.
Contours sound has seen him find a home on London’s Rhythm Section imprint, alongside Henry Wu, Al Dobson Jr and Chaos in the CBD amongst others. As well as Rhyhm Section, contours has released with labels including Tru-Thoughts, Shall Not Fade, Fly high Society, On the Corner and Far out, and received support from the likes of Alex Nut, Benji B, Moxie and Cottam.
As well as his productions, Contours sound is channelled via monthly radio shows on NTS and Reform, playing musical influences from all over the world.
BBRAVE, aka Benjamin Lebrave, is the founder and owner of Akwaaba Music. Established in 2008, the label is an outlet for BBRAVE’s endless passion for African music. Lebrave has been working with over 70 recording artists from 15 African nations, and has been growing a global network spanning content production, digital distribution, marketing and licensing. Today Akwaaba Music is recognized by its peers as a much needed, forward-thinking window onto Africa. As a DJ, BBRAVE focuses on the dancefloor side of things, mashing together the staggering variety of dance music genres made in Africa, from kuduro to coupé décalé, kwaito and kwassa house to hiplife, gbema or soukous. BBRAVE also keeps an open ear for other strains of tropical beats, constantly bridging the gap between Africa, the Americas, and Europe, combining his own array of beats into an infectiously potent musical stew.
DJ BBRAVE has been DJing for well over a decade, always looking for a different edge to keep the crowd shaking, and to keep his mind interested. Discovering African club sounds around 2006 was love at first sight. Since then, the syncopated fruity loop beats have been spreading overwhelmingly positive vibrations from Africa, and have conquered the hearts, minds and feet of crowds from Accra to Berlin, Luanda to Mexico City. Following in the footsteps of vinyl-era crate-digging DJs, BBRAVE spins tracks that have yet to hit the blogs. Collecting CD-Rs and demos from across Africa, he makes sure to leave everyone drooling for his fresh sounds, and sweating to his contagious beats. Song after song, BBRAVE rides the thin line between authentic and accessible, always pushing the sonic boundaries at the clubs and events he plays at.

moxie is many things: a Londoner born and bred, raised on raving and records; a seasoned DJ, playing big-room clubs and sweatbox basements worldwide; a charming radio host, as at home on national FM as regional stations and independent start-ups. It’s this balancing act between the underground and the mainstream that’s seen her become one of the UK’s hottest DJs.
Starting out covering for Sinden’s Kiss FM show in 2010, Moxie began guesting on pirate radio station Rinse and regularly DJing on the London club circuit. Her DJing experiences have been as broad and ambitious as her tastes. Moxie’s selections of house, techno, disco and garage have seen her reach such wide and varying audiences that she became so in demand, the legendary super-club fabric invited her to play their Room One no less than six times in 2014.
Moxie may be at home in the club, but she also shines on the airwaves. After being selected for BBC Radio 1’s ‘In New DJs We Trust’ 2013 series, 2014 saw her graduate to dance music’s upper ranks by covering for DJ Heidi’s Residency show, and going onto host her own Residency slot the same year and continues to do so. Throughout this mainstream exposure, though, she’s remained loyal to her independent roots. After landing her own show on east London’s NTS Radio in 2011, she’s been hosting the same slot ever since and has been heavily involved in the station’s development.
Her work includes hosting in-depth interviews under the title ‘Moxie Presents’, inviting legends such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier and newcomers Lapsley and Formation onto the show. As well as six-hour takeovers with renowned guest DJs, she also programmes and hosts special broadcasts around the world on behalf of NTS Radio, including the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo.
Through NTS Radio, Moxie has also started a compilation series, ‘Moxie Presents’ which is moving into its 3rd instalment in 2016 showcasing producers she supports on her radio shows. Both volumes have featured a broad selection of artists including Lone, Medlar, Ikonika, Kowton, SCNTST & Lord Tusk. Gaining heavy support across BBC Radio 1 and a nod from key publications such as Resident Advisor, XLR8R, FACT and Mixmag, 2016 sees a highly anticipated third instalment in the works.
Moxie has also recorded mixes for a range of platforms: FACT, Warehouse Project, Boiler Room, RBMA Radio, iD Magazine, Truants, Solid Steel and each one has had their own, special treatment; pulling together her years behind the decks, on-air and in the club, with passion, knowledge and flair.
At the start of 2016, Moxie announced the launch of ‘On Loop.’ A nomadic club night and record label with dates confirmed in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Paris, Lyon, Glastonbury Festival and beyond.
On the label side of this On Loop is set to become a physical outlet for selected cuts taken from the ‘Moxie Presents’ compilation series. With her talent for selecting and promoting quality music, Moxie’s ascent to the top is as smooth as it is earned.

The band succeeded in creating a completely unique sound blending reggae, ska and dub with influences from blues, african music, sixties psychedelic rock and so much more. So calling Karamoja a reggae band really does not cover the load. Karamoja brings their own songs, although every now and then a non-cliché cover may find its way onto the playlist whenever the occasion rises. Karamoja stands for positive vibes and exhilarating rhythms, sweet and mellow the one moment, rough and dirty the other. Created by four Ugandan women, through short film, live art performances, theatre and photography, we will present the ways in which historical memory and ways of being are weaved into the nap of black peoples.
